The artwork of Russ Farris will be on screen at the Eula Bass Lewis Art Gallery on the campus of Jones Higher education via Feb. 17. The public is invited to watch, no cost of demand, the exceptional cartoon and pop tradition screen of paintings, sketches, illustrations and prints called “Saturday Morning Salvation.” 

The University of Southern Mississippi graduate and previous Leader-Contact cartoonist will also be sharing his process of generating artwork with an “Art Talk” at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in the art gallery.

“Ever because I was a kid, I’ve liked cartoons,” Farris claimed. “I taught myself to draw by copying comedian strips and coloring reserve web pages. I attract what helps make me pleased, and that is anything I’ve normally carried out due to the fact I was a boy or girl.”

The Petal indigenous and present-day Ellisville resident’s artwork has always been heavily motivated by comedian textbooks, cartoons and pop culture. Considering the fact that his past show at Jones College or university in 2009, he has focused extra on his type. As a college student, Farris believed his work experienced to be “fine art” until eventually he noticed the perform of Daniel Johnston. He also used cartoon characters to convey himself ,which gave Farris the self esteem to “cartoon” as a way to perform through his personal private sights and beliefs.

“I use cartoon characters to link and express a variety of concepts that vary from philosophical to absurd,” he mentioned. “I use these characters to represent strategies and connection pop culture to other pop culture. I like to choose well-recognized pop lifestyle characters and attract them a small bit wonky, offering them more eyes or wings. I started carrying out that numerous decades back in my sketchbooks, and more than the decades, these excess components have become symbols in my get the job done.”

Farris is training public school art. Even though performing in the information market, Farris won a initially-location award from the Mississippi Press Affiliation for an editorial cartoon. His get the job done has also been on show at the University of South Alabama, many team displays and most just lately, at Lupercalia Art Society in Mobile, Ala., before just about fully marketing out.
